David Letterman currently hosts a show on Netflix where he interviews some of the largest celebrities and thought leaders on the planet. This show is aptly titled, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.

I think it’s safe to say that Dr. Skarupski’s next guest on the Faculty Factory podcast needs no introduction.

I’ve had the honor of working as podcast editor and producer with Dr. Skarupski since this Faculty Factory initiative launched at the start of this year. The guests on this podcast continue to inspire and amaze me.

She it thought provoking, funny, interesting and highly accomplished.

Dr. D became both the first woman and the first pediatrician to earn the position of editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in 2000. This is a position she held until 2011.

Before JAMA, Dr. DeAngelis served as Professor and Vice Dean of Faculty at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore. She is now back at Johns Hopkins where she is colleagues with our Factory Faculty host, Dr. Skarupski. You can learn more about her career on the Johns Hopkins website and by visiting her Wikipedia page.

Her recent book Pursuing Equity in Medicine: One Woman’s Journey details her fascinating life story.

As she discusses in her book, she has been held by Chechnyan rebels and hit by a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus. She is a strong proponent of keeping your sense of humor in difficult times.

The podcast delves into some stories from Dr. D’s time in faculty affairs. This includes topics such as downtime/recreation, negotiations, mentorships, and of course equity in medicine.

“Equity means that you’re fair and impartial and you’re free from bias or favoritism,” she explained.

According to her book, Dr. D defines the “Four T’s” as cornerstones for any leader: toughness, tenacity, thick skin—and a tender heart. All the T’s are massively important as you’ll hear on today’s podcast. I love her thoughts on tenacity:

“Tenacity, or toughmindedness, means you hold on to an idea you believe is good no matter how hard that might be. You stick with it,” she said.

She describes the importance of balancing that thick skin with a tender heart around the halfway point of today’s podcast.
