Eric B. Bass, MD, MPH, is our guest this week for another installment of the Faculty Factory Podcast. Dr. Bass is interviewed about the habits, hacks, and hints he has implemented over the years in his successful and accomplished career in academic medicine.
Dr. Bass is a general internist and Professor with Johns Hopkins Medicine. He holds a joint appointment in the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the Department of Health Policy and Management, and Epidemiology. Dr. Bass also serves as Director of the Johns Hopkins Evidence-based Practice Center.
Dr. Bass arrived at Johns Hopkins in 1987 for a two-year fellowship and he stayed a lot longer than he originally planned!
“I ended up enjoying Hopkins much more than I ever anticipated,” he told us.
We discuss important topics in today’s conversation, such as balancing the needs of a new born child with the demands of an academic career.
He also talked with us about what he finds important in working with a mentor. Having a mentor that can be there for you beyond providing career advice can be very helpful.
“For me it was about having mentors that cared about my life, and not just my career,” he said.
Dr. Bass has wisdom that will surely benefit anyone involved in academic medicine at all career levels.
