Dr. Patterson

On today’s episode of the Faculty Factory podcast we have a chat with Leigh A. Patterson, MD, MAEd. Dr. Patterson is Associate Dean for Faculty Development at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

Another great conversation ensues on this new episode of our podcast. Dr. Patterson’s interview includes some strong learning opportunities when it comes to hearing about some of the key pivots she made throughout her career.

“I wound up in faculty development as my career evolved,” Dr. Patterson said. “This isn’t what I originally thought I’d do.”

Dr. Patterson came into faculty development after spending 10 years of her career as a residency director in emergency medicine. While she was residency director, she pursued a master’s degree in adult education at East Carolina.

This would prove to be the start of a major pivot in Dr. Patterson’s career.

She started this coursework with the goal of helping her do the job she loved as Residency Director even better; it was about 3-4 courses into her master’s program when she realized she was becoming more and more drawn to the teacher aspect of the curriculum.

“I became more interested in, challenged by, and enthusiastic to the challenges the teacher faces more so than what the learner faces, “ Dr. Patterson said.

This realization resulted in a shift in her career journey. In the opening minutes of today’s podcast, Dr. Patterson tells us about some of the important epiphanies she reached while gaining her graduate degree in adult education.

She describes some other important takeaways that we can learn from while discussing her time working with trainees and faculty throughout this episode.
