Virtual Caregiving Community

The Virtual Caregiving Community is a passionate group of faculty members from various institutions who provide care for their older family members and spouses/partners. This group also includes individuals in the “sandwich generation” who are raising children while providing care for aging parents. Since June 2023, we have met monthly to share emotional support and practical caregiving advice. The advice and tips come from faculty caregivers who understand the unique nuances of working in academic medicine.

With the goal of building a legacy community around caregiving, we hope to normalize the caregiving experience and support one another through listening, storytelling, and sharing ideas to advance new policies at our own institutions. We encourage you to join us at an upcoming meeting—or to start a group at your own institution—so we can further align institutional attitudes and policies with the simple fact that caregiving is a normal part of faculty life! To date, our efforts have resulted in a curated list of resources, tips, and advice organized into the categories below.

Please contact us with feedback or email Kimberly Skarupski, PhD, MPH, at kskarupski@utmb.edu to learn more, join an upcoming meeting, or suggest an addition to our collection of resources and advice.
