Why Happiness and Productivity Go Hand and Hand

Listen now:

Dr. Lyness

We have another fantastic guest this week on the Faculty Factory podcast, and once again I learned a lot of useful information that will help me in my day-to-day duties within the Office of Faculty at Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine.

I hope you find it to have the same type of impact on your work! This week we have Jeffrey M. Lyness, MD, FACPsych, on the podcast from the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY.

Dr. Lyness is Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology in the School of Medicine and Dentistry. He also served as Chair of the 2018-2019 Group on Faculty Affairs (GFA) Steering Committee.

Self-Determination Theory was a key theme throughout this episode and as Dr. Lyness outlines for us in plain language, happiness and productivity are in lockstep when it comes to our line of work (and countless other career endeavors).

According to Dr. Lyness, “In a nutshell, Self-Determination Theory is a theory of human motivation that postulates that to the degree that people’s autonomous motivation is engaged they end up being both happier and more productive. The happiness and productivity go hand and hand with each other.”

Dr. Lyness also made the important point that “productivity” in this sense doesn’t necessarily mean more throughput. It’s productivity in the sense of more creative thinking and engagement of better problem solving skills.

These definitely sound like outcomes we are all looking for in Faculty Development!

I learned a lot form our chat about Self-Determination Theory and ways to promote autonomous and intrinsic motivation to help our faculty be more successful and happier.

We also discussed the value of 360 Reviews. Dr. Lyness described how 360 Reviews are used at his institution. At around the 27-minute mark of this podcast we chat about how to build a valid data set for a 360.

“It’s an opportunity for people to speak up,” Dr. Lyness said.

There are some other great nuggets of information about how to get the most out of a 360 around the midway point of today’s episode.
