Today’s episode of the Faculty Factory Podcast features Sarah R. Andrews, MD. Dr. Andrews joins us for an uplifting and informative interview about the habits and hacks that have helped her raise two young kids while successfully navigating the demands of an academic career.

With Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, Dr. Andrews serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry.

I always find the habits and hacks fascinating to hear about, and today’s discussion is no exception. This discussion centers around the always important topic of striving to attain a work-life balance.

As discussed in today’s podcast, having twin girls helped Dr. Andrews decide what her true priorities in life were, and how to balance her career goals with being the best possible parent to her children.

“Having the girls put everything into perspective for me,” she told us.

There is some really practical advice on how to be present with your children and take care of your priorities at work in today’s podcast.

For example, when Dr. Andrews is in the waiting room at ballet practice for a couple hours, she said that’s a great time to catch up on work. However, she would never be on her laptop during an actual performance.

One should always be careful while multitasking, but when done in moderation, there are ways to successfully take care of two tasks at once as a parent.

We also chat about communicating your work schedule with your children and having “age appropriate” discussions on the nature of your work. This can help explain to a child why Mommy or Daddy has to see patients on weekends sometimes.
