Lorraine T. Dean, ScD, is our guest on today’s edition of the Faculty Factory Podcast. We discuss the Habits and Hacks that have led to Dr. Dean’s success as a social epidemiologist and emerging mid-career faculty member.
At the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Dr. Dean serves as Associate Professor, Department of Epidemiology (primary); and Associate Professor, Department of Oncology (joint).
As a social epidemiologist, Dr. Dean studies the social context for what people do, why they do it, when and where they do it, and the implications it has for our health. Most of her work has focused on cancer and HIV outcomes.

Towards the end of today’s podcast we discuss the importance of establishing time every day to focus on your mental health.
“I decided if I can’t find ten minutes to spend on my mental health, something is very wrong and I need to recalibrate and adjust,” she said.
“That’s shameful, and it’s a telltale sign that I am overworked if I cannot find ten minutes to calm my mind and spend some time being thankful and grateful.”
