Making her Faculty Factory Podcast debut this week is Jennifer A. Villwock, MD!  Dr. Villwock joins us for a full exploration of wellness within our field.

Dr. Villwock currently serves as Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City.

As Dr. Villlwock points out early in this episode, wellness is not something that we have historically done well for ourselves within the culture of medicine.

“I think from my perspective, one of the ways that we can best serve each other in terms of our own professional development is just being more open about conversations about wellness,” she said.

When it comes to the culture of medicine, there is often an “attitude of sacrifice” that comes with being a trainee and professional. As discussed in today’s show, it is important to:

  • Be aware of this phenomenon.
  • Try to break this cycle.

“The conversation we should be having is not “who can suffer more,” but, why are we suffering and what is the meaning and purpose behind it?,” she said.
