Listen now:
Joining us this week on the Faculty Factory Podcast is Garima Sharma, MD. Dr. Sharma shares with us a recent paper she worked on in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology regarding toxic workplace culture in cardiology, and its broader implications in medicine.
With Johns Hopkins Medicine, Dr. Sharma serves as Assistant Professor in the Division of Cardiology and Associate Vice Chair for Women’s Careers in Academic Medicine.
“The whole premise behind the paper was to understand the prevalence of hostility, or toxicity in the workforce,” Dr. Sharma said.
The survey conducted by the American College of Cardiology found 44% of the 5,000 cardiologists who responded reported experiencing a hostile work environment.
The paper is called Global Prevalence and Impact of Hostility, Discrimination, and Harassment in the Cardiology Workplace, and you can read more about it here: https://www.jacc.org/doi/10.1016/j.jacc.2021.03.301
I want to personally thank Dr. Sharma for all of the hard work that she is doing in this space.
It is thanks to the tireless efforts of Dr. Sharma and her colleagues that we are better able to raise awareness on the need to fix this type of toxic culture. My hope is that it allows us to better address these abhorrent issues of harassment and discrimination.
