This week we’re talking with Wiley “Chip” Souba, MD, on the Faculty Factory Podcast. Dr. Souba joins us for a discussion about the inward journey of leadership.

As Dr. Souba puts it: leading yourself is the prerequisite to being an effective leader of others.

“It’s a journey because it’s a lifelong endeavor, a mountain with no top. And it’s about leadership because it’s about leading yourself.”

Dr. Souba is a Professor of Surgery with the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH. He has also held other prestigious positions with Dartmouth College, including:

  • Former Dean of the Geisel School of Medicine
  • Former Vice President for Health Affairs

“You want to discover for yourself that your moment-to-moment way of being and acting has a huge impact on those around you,” he told us.

Dr. Souba discusses the importance of standing up for your values within our career journeys and in life. He also emphasized the value of not taking yourself too seriously.

“As you go through life, it’s very helpful to have a loose relationship, even a detached relationship with this thing called me,” Dr. Souba said.
