Listen now:

Dr. Gusic

Today’s episode of the Faculty Factory podcast includes a lively discussion with Maryellen Gusic, MD.

Dr. Gusic is the Senior Advisor for Educational Affairs and Professor of Medical Education in Pediatrics at the University of Virginia (UVA) Medical School in Charlottesville, Va. She is also a past president of the Academic Pediatric Association.

Making the UVA Connections

As we mentioned at the outset of today’s episode, Dr. Gusic is the third faculty member to join our podcast from the UVA Medical School.  We’ve previously had dynamic conversations with Drs. Susan Pollart and Troy Buer. If you’d like to go back and take a listen to those episodes, I have provided the links here:

Measuring the Impact

Early in her career, Dr. Gusic had a vision to work with her colleagues with a mission to collectively increase their skills, and develop academic niches together as educators.

She had her first encounters with faculty development in her early days working in the Pediatrics Department at Penn State, and later at the institutional level. Her work at Penn State provided her the chance to start thinking about how to study and measure the impact of faculty development projects.

As Codirector of the Jr. Faculty Development Program at Penn State she began thoroughly building her robust background in academic affairs. This work prepared her for her current position as the Senior Advisor for Educational Affairs and Professor of Medical Education in Pediatrics at the University of Virginia.

Leadership

As we discussed in today’s episode, the linchpin of strong programming comes from leadership that not only supports faculty development, but commits to putting the resources and effort behind what we do. Leadership also must help make sure the other departments recognize that everyone is in support of these programs.

The leadership also has to be made aware of the infrastructure needs to support the vision as to how the programming coincides and dovetails with the overall institution’s culture. That’s how the sustainability of quality programming is built.
