Barbara Fivush, MD, is our guest on today’s episode of the Faculty Factory Podcast. She joins us for an engaging chat about the habits and hacks that have led to her success in academic medicine. She also shares with us some of the wisdom she has gained while launching three different leadership programs for women faculty.
With the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Dr. Fivush serves as Senior Associate Dean of Women; Director, Office of Women in Science and Medicine; and Professor of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Nephrology.
“Working on your career is a long-term process. It is a marathon, not a sprint,” Dr. Fivush said.
The need to stay focused and resilient during the inevitable ups and down of your career is a must, Dr. Fivush told us.
“Leadership is not something you should put off until you are a full professor and want to be a dean. Leadership is something you do every day,” she said.
It is impossible for every day to be a great one. That is a hard reality for a lot of us perfectionists to swallow. Dr. Fivush and I discuss best practices for dealing with that. As we discuss, practicing mindfulness when we are on edge is helpful.
It is very important to be aware of how we are being perceived by others as we practice leadership in everything we do.
“The way we present ourselves is the way people remember us,” Dr. Fivush said.
There are many more great takeaways that will be useful for listeners at all stages of their career on today’s podcast with Dr. Fivush.
