Today’s Faculty Factory podcast guest is Alistair J. Kent, MD, MPH, FACS. With Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, Dr. Kent serves as Assistant Professor of Surgery and Assistant Professor of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine.

He is a trauma and emergency general surgeon, surgical critical care doctor, part-time health services researcher, and a self-described “quality improvement project person.”

Like so many of our recent guests, Dr. Kent wears many hats and the effort to balance these responsibilities made for an interesting chat on today’s episode. This is especially interesting given the extra uncertainty of a global pandemic thrown into the mix.

Running his life and career like a small corporation is what helps Dr. Kent strike that balance as you’ll learn on today’s episode.

Taking a precise, engineer-like approach to managing his responsibilities was a “survival skill” he managed to develop over time. As he discusses on today’s show, Dr. Kent has used some commercially available software to help him avoid “ending up with a list of to-do lists” while prioritizing tasks.

As an emergency physician, Dr. Kent is used to being able to quickly pivot to save a life. As you’ll learn on today’s show, he’s been able to transfer some of those problem solving skills to deal with other aspects of his life.
