Today’s episode of the Faculty Factory Podcast features a discussion with Bernard “Beau” Landry-Wegener, MD. Dr. Landry-Wegener discusses how he has leveraged a unique theater background into his successful career in academic medicine.
Dr. Landry-Wegener is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. As you’ll learn on today’s episode, there are many habits and hacks he picked up as a musical theater actor that are transferable to his career today with Johns Hopkins.
Dr. Landry-Wegener is a native of the vibrant New Orleans area. He attended his hometown’s Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans for medical school after a career in the arts.
“I wanted to find a career where I didn’t have to be an actor,” Dr. Landry-Wegener told us. “After a lot of soul searching, I wound up in medicine, and through residency, I’ve been rediscovering the different ways that theater is still a part of my everyday life.”
While many folks do not necessarily associate theater with medicine, on today’s interview, you will learn how acting skills become useful when communicating as a healthcare provider. The value of having a musical theater background assists Dr. Landry-Wegener in his interactions with colleagues, patients, and their families.
“This skillset allows me to — hopefully — provide empathetic, open, and receptive interactions with my patients and in all the other interactions I have on a day-to-day basis,” he said.
